This is Delmy.

Delmy is a girl from a small village in Guatemala, a long way from the nearest town. About 2 years ago, she developed a severe problem on her right eye.

Her family – poor, uneducated, isolated – didn’t know what to do. But even if they had known, they didn’t have enough money for transportation to visit a doctor, let alone the medical costs.

So Delmy suffered, alone in her village. Her problem grew. Her pain increased.

But one day, a local volunteer for Hope for the Rio Dulce happened upon Delmy during a visit to her village. After discovering Delmy and her problem, he rallied support for her.

By pooling money donated by St. Helen parishioners, donations from other groups, as well as some local donations – our intrepid volunteer found enough funding to get Delmy to a hospital in Guatemala City, where she is now receiving treatment.

Delmy’s prognosis is uncertain. The treatment has eased her pain and improved her condition, but she still has a long ways to go. But at least she has a chance. At least she now has access to care.

Everyone deserves that.
